Kung Fu Summer Camp – Frequently Asked Questions

What is your Covid-19 vaccination policy?

We require all student and staff to be fully vaccinated in order to attend summer camp. Full vaccination is defined as having received the second dose in a two dose COVID-19 vaccine series, or a single dose COVID-19 vaccine, two or more weeks ago. Boosters are required for those old enough to receive them.

WHERE WILL CAMPS BE HELD THIS YEAR?

Our camps will be held entirely outside in the fresh air of Mt Tabor. You can see a map to the training area here.

WHERE IS DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP?

Drop off and pick up will be on the South side of Mt Tabor, upper reservoir. Take SE 60th Street to SE Lincoln Street. Drive East toward the park on SE Lincon Street past the community garden up the hill toward the “pump house” and set of stairs that lead to the upper South reservoir. There will be a camp instructor at the base of the stairs to greet you.

WHAT TYPE OF MARTIAL ART IS PUKULAN KUNG FU?

Pukulan (pu’ku’lan) is an Indonesian martial art that incorporates the movement of 4 animals; monkey, crane, tiger and snake. Students build focus, balance, and coordination through fun kung fu exercises, pad drills, forms, and games.

DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO HAVE PREVIOUS MARTIAL ARTS EXPERIENCE?

No experience is required. Kung Fu Summer Camps are great introduction to learning martial arts. Beginners are encouraged to join the fun!

WHAT IS THE STUDENT TO INSTRUCTOR RATIO?

We will have small groups of 12 students in a stable group with the same 2 instructors all week.

WHO ARE THE INSTRUCTORS AND WHAT IS THEIR EXPERIENCE?

Our instructors like to have fun!  One With Heart instructors are chosen for their ability to inspire and connect with students. All of our instructors are actively training martial arts and participate in teacher trainings.  All One With Heart instructors have passed a criminal background check and have up to date CPR/First Aid certification.

WHAT WILL MY CHILD BE DOING DURING CAMP?

Our Kung Fu Summer Camps are a great combination of martial arts training based on a cool camp theme and movement games, art projects, park exploration, free play time, and storytelling. We break into small training groups based on the age and level of experience. The four-animal style of Pukulan kung fu captures the imagination of students while they learn to move like the monkey, crane, tiger and snake. Obstacle courses, striking to pads, movement games, and balance challenges make for a high energy camp day. We also take time to practice the calm internal parts of training martial arts through awareness games, meditation and reflective art projects.

What to Wear – Kids will be outside for the whole day training in and playing in the park. Think layers! Closed toe shoes, camp t-shirts with a jacket over the top, sun hat or ball cap, shorts or sweatpants that allow for big movement and are okay to get dirty.

Camp T-shirt – Kids wear their Kung Fu Summer Camp t-shirt every day of camp. Each camper receives a camp t-shirt on the first day.

Sack lunch – Please pack a HUGE lunch with lots of snacks. Kids will be working up a big appetite, so more is better. Kids do not share food due to safety around food allergies.

Water bottle – No glass containers.

Sunscreen – Please apply sunscreen before arriving to camp. This will help with a smooth drop off transition. Please write your child’s name on their personal sunscreen. We will also provide sunscreen for kids as a backup.

*We ask that stuffed animals, Pokemon/Magic cards and all other “toys”are left at home.  Electronics are not allowed at camp. Books and art supplies are welcome.

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS DURING CAMP?

Kung Fu Summer Camps will be held entirely outdoors at Mt Tabor Park. We will be training, hiking, and playing outdoors the whole day including on rainy or sunny days. In the case of extreme weather conditions or unsafe air quality, camp will take place at our school at 4231 SE Hawthorne Blvd. We will text you by 7am the day of the change to confirm.

ALLERGIES/MEDICAL

If you child has medical concerns or medications to be taken during camp we require parents to provide a written and signed explanation of care procedures along with contacting OWH staff before the first day of camp.

If your child has allergies that require an Epi-Pen we ask parents to provide written instructions and signed permission slip given to instructors to administer this medicine. Please label container or plastic bag for the medicine, with the name of your child, first parent contact name and phone number. Please contact OWH staff in advance of camp with this information.

BEHAVIOR POLICY

We intend for every child to have a safe and fun camp experience. If a child is having challenges following the camp rules, is being consistently unsafe or disruptive, and not responding to instructor's redirection or guidance, we will call home for pick up. When a student is sent home due to behavior challenges, they are not eligible to return to camp. There is not a camp refund when a child is asked to leave camp.

AIR QUALITY POLICY

Due to the outdoor nature of this camp, we will make the best decisions for our campers and staff in the event of poor air quality. If the air quality index (AQI) for the camp location is forecasted to be listed as UNHEALTHY (AQI = 151 or higher) throughout the camp day according to purpleair.com and airnow.gov, the camp day will be held indoors at our school at 4231 SE Hawthorne Blvd. Our program reserves the right to make decisions in real-time as conditions change.

EXTREME HEAT POLICY

If temperatures exceed 90 degrees, activities are modified, and moved into shady areas. Students are reminded consistently to drink extra water and electrolyte-replacement drinks. If temperatures are predicted to hit or exceed 100 degrees by noon (12:00pm) then camp will take place at our school for that day. Our program reserves the right to make decisions in real-time as conditions change.

LIGHTNING POLICY

Thunder and lightning are rare during the summer months. In the event of a lightning storm, groups are asked to calmy walk or run with instructors to a covered structure if it is safe to do so. If the storm is overhead and travel to a covered structure is unsafe, staff and participants will shelter underneath the canopy of a medium-sized tree, having them squat down with only their feet touching the ground. As soon as they are able, the group continues toward the covered structure for cover until the storm passes.
